2009 Red Bull Romaniacs Video
RedBullRomaniacs 2009 from Romaniacs Sibiu on Vimeo.
What a showdown in Sibiu, central Romania: The last of four Offroad Stages once again demands a 110% from everybody in the remaining field, with the strongest end at Andreas Lettenbichler and his BMW team. On the second place comes a still very satisfied Chris Birch, ahead of Andorran three times Red Bull Romaniacs winner Cyril Despres.

The Flintstones motorcycle?
We just came across this on the web and look at it as to a prehistoric motorcycle (yes, even though it is actually a bicycle from 1791), especially after reading that it’s form was inspired by animals such as horses, birds and snakes.
Invented by frenchmen, Comte Mede de Sivrac this early precursor of the bicycle => motorcycle had no steering and we can’t see any pedals, so we guess that Fred Barney would easily find its place on it and ride with style. thx to topspeed.com

Aussie scientists find coconut-carrying octopus
By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press Writer Kristen Gelineau, Associated Press Writer – 2 hrs 56 mins ago
SYDNEY – Australian scientists have discovered an octopus in Indonesia that collects coconut shells for shelter — unusually sophisticated behavior that the researchers believe is the first evidence of tool use in an invertebrate animal. The scientists filmed the veined octopus, Amphioctopus marginatus, selecting halved coconut shells from the sea floor, emptying them out, carrying them under their bodies up to 65 feet (20 meters), and assembling two shells together to make a spherical hiding spot.
Julian Finn and Mark Norman of Museum Victoria in Melbourne observed the odd activity in four of the creatures during a series of dive trips to North Sulawesi and Bali in Indonesia between 1998 and 2008. Their findings were published Tuesday in the journal Current Biology.
"I was gobsmacked," said Finn, a research biologist at the museum who specializes in cephalopods. "I mean, I've seen a lot of octopuses hiding in shells, but I've never seen one that grabs it up and jogs across the sea floor. I was trying hard not to laugh."
Octopuses often use foreign objects as shelter. But the scientists found the veined octopus going a step further by preparing the shells, carrying them long distances and reassembling them as shelter elsewhere.
That's an example of tool use, which has never been recorded in invertebrates before, Finn said.
"What makes it different from a hermit crab is this octopus collects shells for later use, so when it's transporting it, it's not getting any protection from it," Finn said. "It's that collecting it to use it later that is unusual."
The researchers think the creatures probably once used shells in the same way. But once humans began cutting coconuts in half and discarding the shells into the ocean, the octopuses discovered an even better kind of shelter, Finn said.
The findings are significant, in that they reveal just how capable the creatures are of complex behavior, said Simon Robson, associate professor of tropical biology at James Cook University in Townsville.
"Octopuses have always stood out as appearing to be particularly intelligent invertebrates," Robson said. "They have a fairly well-developed sense of vision and they have a fairly intelligent brain. So I think it shows the behavioral capabilities that these organisms have."
There is always debate in the scientific community about how to define tool use in the animal kingdom, Robson said. The Australian researchers defined a tool as an object carried or maintained for future use. But other scientists could define it differently, which means it's difficult to say for certain whether this is the first evidence of such behavior in invertebrates, Robson said.
Still, the findings are interesting, he said.
"It's another example where we can think about how similar humans are to the rest of the world," Robson said. "We are just a continuum of the entire planet."

CONTEST: JUMPING MOTORCYCLES INTO THE SEA
A rather quiet and exclusive yacht club in Beirut, Lebanon was recently transformed into a bone breaking area as twenty-five bikers gathered to see who can jump his motorcycle the furthest into the sea and win the $1,000 prize. Not only it is a miracle they all got out of it alive, but the contest even had a winner, Joseph Geaga, who jumped his dirt bike (now a submarine) an impressive 175 feet from the launch ramp. Congrats to him and let’s hope the cash prize is enough for a new bike. Not a congrats to the eco-syestem...

125cc Honda scooter is London’s street washing machine
Little did Honda knew that one of their 125cc scooter will end up a tool for washing the filth off the streets of London, but this picture says it all. GB imported the Honda street washing machine from France; it seems that the idea of such a utility vehicle was first put into practice back in the Eighties in Paris.
A water vacuum system and a 25-litre box set it apart from its standard siblings, but also the £12,000 ($19,981) price. Just make sure you don’t confuse it with a pizza bike because that can kill your appetite.

FINALLY, THE COUNTDOWN TRAFFIC LIGHT!
Just one look at this countdown traffic light and you know it's a rad idea. A progress bar on a stop light? We're on board with that. Besides alleviating frustration, designer Damjan Stanković sees his idea saving energy — when motorists know there's plenty of time until the light turns green, they'll shut their engines off to conserve fuel.
This design concept should be immediately implemented on every traffic signal in the world. Maybe the countdown feature could be used on the yellow and green lights, too. This can't be difficult to make, either, since many traffic lights are already using LEDs that could be easily rearranged.

TIGER WOODS GETS CITED BY POLICE
Woods withdrew Monday from his own golf tournament, citing injuries from this crash.
ORLANDO, Fla.(AP)—Tiger Woods will be cited for careless driving in a car crash outside his Orlando-area mansion, but will not face criminal charges, the Florida Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Woods faces a $164 fine and four points against his driver’s license, not close to enough to have it suspended. The citation closes the investigation of last week’s crash.
The patrol “is not pursuing criminal charges in this matter nor is there any testimony or other evidence to support any additional charges of any kind other than the charge of careless driving,” Sgt. Kim Montes said. (continued)
